HEATHER BRAUN – owner | designer | maker
A lifelong interest in design and its physical manifestations led to the wonderfully material world of letterpress printing. Porchlight Press founder, Heather Braun incubated her passion for letterpress over a number of years.
During this time, she completed a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Guelph, another in Communication Design at Emily Carr University, and worked as an urban and graphic designer.
Her affinity for typography, texture, and for the tactile naturally led her to channel her design skills into operating a bustling Vancouver letterpress printing and design studio.
THE STUDIO
Upon first glance, our Mount Pleasant print shop resembles a museum filled with beautiful antique machinery from yesteryear. Looking around a little further, the space unfolds into a mix of old and modern tools working together to create a vast variety of quality paper goods. Our well oiled studio is a bustling creative space producing our own greeting cards and stationery, along with an array of custom printing and design work. We produce pieces ranging from business cards, personal stationery and brand development, to wedding and event invitations, distinctive packaging, tags and coasters. Sky’s the limit! …as long as it fits in our press of course.

‘‘A lot of our clients come to us because they value both local and quality. People are looking for something unique.”
One happy client calls Porchlight Press the ‘Bentley press’ of Vancouver. Certainly walking into the letterpress shop—with printing presses dating back to the turn of the 20th century—one can sense an appreciation for vintage style and a keen attention to detail.

Story by Katie Nanton
“It was like The Alchemist,” says Heather Braun, owner and creative director of Porchlight Press. “Letterpress kept showing up in my life, and the more I wanted to learn, the more it kept appearing.” There was the antique letterpress gifted from a friend, the opportunity to acquire acclaimed graphic designer Jim Rimmer’s Colt’s Press, along with a gnawing desire to create something tactile in her everyday work. As the form kept finding her, function soon followed, and a providential path led the young Vancouverite to open up Porchlight Press, a custom printing and design studio, this past January.
“What’s unique is that I’m a designer and a printer,” says Braun, who worked as a landscape architect and graphic designer before setting down entrepreneurial roots. “That’s why I can stand behind the quality.”
